Introduction

In the past years, the use of mechanochemistry to carry out solventless C–H functionalizations through the formation of metallacycles has gained ground in chemical synthesis and its applicability is expected to become more general. In this presentation, José G. Hernández will give an overview of the topic, focussing on the mechanistic steps that lead to the activation of C–H bonds by mechanochemistry.

José G. Hernández

José G. Hernández studied chemistry at the Universidad Industrial de Santander in Colombia and completed his Ph.D. in chemistry at the CINVESTAV-IPN in Mexico. Then, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at McGill University in Canada before moving to RWTH Aachen University in Germany. In 2021, he was appointed as a Senior Research Associate at the Division of Physical Chemistry, Ruđer Bošković Institute in Croatia and accepted a professorship position at the Universidad de Antioquia in Colombia. His research interests include discovering, developing, and understanding chemical reactions under mechanical force and green chemistry-related topics.

He has served as a guest editor of the thematic issues "Mechanochemistry" and "Mechanochemistry II" in the Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, and he is also part of the International Advisory Board of the European Journal of Organic Chemistry.
